About the Urban Healthcare Initiative Program

Our Vision

Everyone is Entitled to Quality Health Care
UHIP’s mission is to utilize basic health literacy training and patient-centered health care strategies to improve outcomes for health problems directly affecting our communities. UHIP promotes low cost preventive care, regular medical screenings, and coordinates the provision of primary care services to individuals who may otherwise not have access to receive such services. We strives to increase patient healthcare knowledge and provider accountability around the seven “health pillars,” (diabetes, COPD, hypertension/cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, cancer screening, HIV/AIDS, and aging/dementia/depression/dying). The target population is primarily African-Americans and Hispanic, and other in-need individuals ages 18 and older, living in these disenfranchised communities.

Alexander SalernoDr. Alexander Salerno MD, MHA
In 2010, Dr. Alexander Salerno launched the Urban Healthcare Initiative Program (UHIP) to address the growing disparity in healthcare outcomes in the urban community through education outreach programs. He and his team reach out to the community through local churches, community centers, even barber shops. Their mission is to provide the highest quality healthcare to the urban communities of northern New Jersey through proactive healthcare and disease management.

Dr. Salerno, a former military captain, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Skidmore College, a medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in the West Indies and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from Seton Hall University.

Currently, Dr. Salerno runs his family-owned and operated practice, Salerno Medical Associates (SMA), which has been serving the East Orange and Newark communities for over 30 years. In addition to SMA and UHIP, Dr. Salerno also oversees the Community Healthcare Outreach Program (CHOP), a local organization that provides house calls to those in need and the mentally ill population throughout Northern New Jersey.

Dr. Salerno received the 2016 Top Doctor Award for his work in SMA’s Newark offices and another 2016 Top Doctor Awards for his work in SMA’s East Orange offices. Salerno Medical Associates has also been recognized as one of the top Newark Family Medical practices in 2016 by Opencare.com, based on patient reviews from Yelp, Google, RateMD. In addition, Dr. Salerno has been honored with the Physician’s Choice Award in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
